Jeans Biography

Jean Butler was born and raised in New York. Her mother originally from Co. Mayo started her in Irish dance classes at the age of four under the guidance of renowned teacher Donald Golden.

Though trained in ballet and tap, Irish dancing became her speciality where she went on to consecutive regional, national and world championships. Jean got her first taste performing alongside her dancing teacher with Mic Moloney's Greenfields of America and later with Cherish the Ladies. At the age of 17, Jean debuted with The Chieftains on St. Patrick's Day in Carnegie Hall. A successful relationship began and lasted several years, touring extensively throughout America, Canada, Europe and Japan.

It was during this time that Jean with dancing partner, the distinguished Colin Dunne, received a standing ovation for their interpretation of the Chieftains 'Cotton Eye Joe.' Jean can be seen on their video. 'The Chieftains – Live From Belfast,' with Roger Daltry and Nanci Griffith. Jeans' taps can also be heard on their album, 'The Long Black Veil' with Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones. Jean has also performed on stage with 'The Pogues' at Brixton Academy.

Whilst studying Drama at the University of Birmingham, Jean received an invitation to perform at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest with Michael Flatley. The resulting piece, entitled 'Riverdance,' caused such a sensation that Producer Moya Doherty decided to extend it into a full scale show. Jean has also enjoyed enormous success, staring in and choreographing ‘Riverdance - The Show,’ performing to sell out audiences around the World and although Jean has now left the show, her work can still be seen in the three companies currently performing in territories around the globe.

Jeans' TV credits include several appearances on The Late Late Show, with David Letterman and Jay Leno. In the UK Jean has performed for the royal family on several occasions, most notably the Royal Variety Show. She also had the honour of appearing in the Kennedy Honours in 1996 . This was her last public engagement for Riverdance. She also made her acting debut in the film 'The Brylcreem Boys, along side Gabriel Byrne, Bill Campbell, John Gordon Sinclair and Angus McFadden.

Jean has collaborated with Donal Lunny, recording on his latest album, 'Coolfin' and performing with the Japanese Kodo Drummers to a sell out audience at Dublin’s RDS.

Jeans' contribution to the dancing world was recognised in April 1999 when she was awarded the prestigious Irish Post Award for her 'outstanding contribution to Irish Dance.'

Jeans' love for dance and performing continued when she rejoined Colin Dunne in the critically acclaimed show Dancing on Dangerous Ground.

Since marrying in 2001, Jean has been involved in several different creative mediums including Film ,T.V. and Journalism. Last year Jean appeared in three different films. The first was as Christopher Eccelson's wife in The Revengers Tragedy starring Eddie Izzard and Dereck Jacobi. The next was as Sean Champion's (of Stones in His Pockets fame) girlfriend in the quirky Irish indie film entitled Goldfish Memory. The third film saw Jean as one half of a dysfunctional marriage in Old Friends written and directed by John Breen (of Alone It Stands fame.) Jean also writes a monthly column for Dublin’s newest most irreverent magazine- the Dubliner.

She was the Artist in Residence for the Irish World Music Centre at the University of Limerick 2003-2005 and has just completed a Masters Degree in Contemporary Dance. She loves sushi, swimming, spending Sundays reading, and working up a good sweat. Her favourite dancer is Sylvia Guillem and would love to one day work with Pina Bausch and Matthew Bourne. She has a dog named Freddie and wants to thank her Grandmother, May Byrne and her mother Josephine for instigating her appreciation of all things Irish.
