Davy was born in Dublin in 1959. He attended Irish-speaking schools where he started to play music from the age of 12 and soon became impassioned by the pipes. He was always encouraged by his family and his father took him all over the country to festivals. From the ages of 13-16 he played at traditional sessions and fairs all over Ireland where he met and played with many of the masters of Irish music. From the age of 16 he played at festivals and concerts in Ireland, Britain and Europe.
When he was 18 yrs he starred in Joe Comerford's film Traveller. Davy was a founder member of Moving Hearts and can be heard on all of their albums. During this time he started to write music and his influence can be heard strongly on their final album The Storm.
In 1988 Davy signed to the independent Irish label Tara. While with them he made, Atlantic Bridge; Out of the Air Shadow Hunter; Pipedreams, and East Wind with Andy Irvine.
After the Atlantic Bridge Album he formed the Davy Spillane Band. The band is featured primarily on all these Tara albums. The band has toured the world extensively promoting these records.
In 1992 Davy returned to live in Liscannor, Co. Clare near the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Doolin. It is here that he wrote and recorded A Place Among the Stones and The Sea of Dreams.
In 1993 he was signed to Sony and in 1994 his album A Place Among the Stones was released on the Columbia label. Sea of Dreams followed with an American release in 1998, then was released in Europe and Japan 1999/2000
Davy launched his own record label "Burrenstone Records" in the year 2000 and looks forward to many releases in the years to come.
He has collaborated on various film scores including Lamb; Wuthering Heights; Eat the Peach; Rob Roy and Michael Collins. He wrote the music for the C4 film The Disappearance of Finbar and the Documentary The Story of Philip Knight.
Davy was a soloist in Riverdance, and Bryan Admans MTV unplugged amongst many others. He has collaborated with many of the world's great artists and is a featured guest soloist on their albums. Davy won a Grammy award for his collaboration with Paul Winter on the Celtic Solstice Album in 2000.
He served his apprentice as a pipe maker with Dan Dowd and Johnny Burke and has made all the instruments he plays. He still makes instruments as his schedule allows.
