Development of the European Youth Circus
In 1987, the festival, initiated by the Romanian artiste Joan Dumitru, was just a meeting of three circus schools in a gymnasium.
In 1988 and 1989, however, the festival took place in the SCALA, an old variety theatre.
In 1990, the location changed once more. The festival was held in the Tattersall and the Municipal Institute for Cultural Affairs in Wiesbaden organised the catering for the artistes as well as a live band.
In 1991, the festival became more professional, since it was entirely organised by the Municipal Institute for Cultural Affairs. In that year, the festival moved to a big top in Delkenheim, a suburb of Wiesbaden.
In 1994, it was determined that the festival was going to be held only biennually.
In 1996, the festival took place in Wiesbaden-Delkenheim for the last time.
In 1998, the artistic festival, which has been called “European Youth Circus” since then, reached its final destination: the large big top on the Dernsches Gelände in the inner city of Wiesbaden (next to the city hall).
In 1998, the prizewinners of the European Youth Circus took part in the one-week guest production in Châtellerault (France) following the festival.
In 2000, the European Union nominated the European Youth Circus as one of four significant cultural events to present itself at EXPO 2000.
The year 2002 was another milestone for the European Youth Circus: No less than 120 circus experts from Europe, the USA and Australia were attracted by the six events in the big top at the Dernsches Gelände.
